Pastoral Care
Somerset College recognises that the education of young people calls for a holistic approach to their education.
The academic, social, emotional, physical and spiritual well being of each individual needs to be looked after so that students leave the school as well-balanced, well-rounded individuals. Essentially we want them to be happy, in a safe environment, so that they can develop into independent young adults, who are well-accepted in the community in which they find themselves.
The Life Orientation Programme aims to teach a variety of skills and each class has two or more periods per cycle of these. Study skills and preparation for examinations are taught, as well as how to deal with issues such as substance abuse, racism, relationship and decision-making, as well as assistance with university and career choices.
Each student is allocated to a Tutor Group of 10 to 15 boys or girls which is led by a member of the teaching staff whose responsibility is to get to know the group and to be there to advise and counsel when necessary. Tutor groups meet each week and go on outings together once a term.
