Somerset College offers a broad, varied cultural programme. As part of the formal curriculum students are exposed to the Dramatic Arts, the Visual Arts and Music, as well as being given numerous opportunities to participate in cultural activities.

Aspirant thespians compete against one another in Inter-House One Act Plays, and are able to audition for the annual school dramatic production. Senior Drama students perform their examination pieces for public audiences twice a year and Grade 8 students are given the opportunity to perform in their own play in the fourth term.

Other than as a subject, students are able to study and enjoy Music in the form of voice and instrument lessons, the orchestra, jazz band and two choirs. Musicians are able to perform either as individuals or as part of a group at the Music Concerts held each term, the annual Pops Concert, in assemblies and at events such as the Helderberg Sunset Concerts and the Somerset College Inter-schools Orchestral Festival.

The school’s junior and senior debating teams compete in the Boland League, and regularly reach the finals of that competition. Inter-House debates are held once a year, and in addition, students are able to address the school at assemblies, house and grade meetings, and at the weekly Prefect assemblies.
