Awards

Academic awards are awarded after each quarterly assessment, where the 'Top 10', merit and diligence awards are announced in the first assembly at the beginning of term. Students who show good progress are also recognised.

Summary

At the annual Academic Awards Evening, Merit, Diligence, Progress, Half colours, Colours and Honours are awarded.

Criteria for Academic Awards:

Merit

Awarded to a student who has attained Merit Awards in all assessments in the year.

Diligence

Awarded to a student who has attained Diligence Awards in all assessments in the year.

Progress

Awarded to a student who has improved during the course of the year.

Half Colours

Awarded to a student who has attained a Merit Award in all assessments except one in either Grades 8 or Grades 9 and 10.

Colours

Awarded to a student who has attained a Merit Award in all assessments except one in either Grades 10 and 11 or 11 and 12

Honours

Awarded to a student who has attained seven 'A' aggregates from Grade 10 to 12. The top 10 students who have achieved academically in each grade, are awarded certificates.

Students are also recognised with Cultural (Drama, Music, Art and Debating) and Service (First Aid, Sound and Lighting, Public Relations, Social Responsibility and other Portfolio activities) awards and colours.

Prestigious Awards:

Opus Campus Award

Awarded for the best music composition performed in a Somerset College music concert during the year; for a well-edited piece that can be easily performed with minimum assistance from the Music Department.

Senior Creative Writing Award

Awarded to the student who has shown consistent excellence and originality in the production of creative writing in English during the senior phase at the College.

Kerr-Peterson Interhouse Trophy

The overall winner of all Interhouse competitions throughout the year.

Sportsman & Sportswoman of the Year

Awarded to the student who displays obvious ability, and has used these talents to the benefit of the College. He/she must have shown loyalty and commitment to at least two sports at the College. Furthermore, this student must have displayed the typical characteristics of an outstanding sportsman or sportswoman which are: fair play, sportsmanship, team spirit and a genuine love for the game.
