Old Oaks Golf Day 2011

Date:August 24, 2011 | Category: News & Events

The 19th of August, 2011 saw the revival of the Old Oaks Golf Day, with its prestigious floating trophy and highly distinguished Old Oaks!

This year, at De Zalze Golf Club, the Old Oaks braved some fickle weather conditions and challenging pin-placements, all in search of glory, fame and other synonyms.

This year, we celebrated the first ever female Old Oak – the fiery and talented Chloë Garner, who has being playing high-class golf in the Unenlightened States of Americans. She dominated the fourball, and was on sparkling form, taking her team to an outstanding 92 points.

We were also happy to have the holders of the Floating Trophy (which, curiously, doesn’t actually float) – the highly experienced and cunning Duisberg fourball.

Despite some flashes of brilliance from all of the teams, the day was won out by the gifted, if not socially challenged, fourball of Burke, Neville, Jordan and Irish, with a slightly unbelievable 95 points. Some fantastic scoring in the very challenging conditions proved that talent is more important than the percentage of your Facebook friends that are actually real-life friends. Well done, you lot!

Other highlights:

Most Golf: Chris Campbell

Best (Worst) Dressed: Chris Campbell

Longest Drive: Phil Taberer

Closest to the Pin: Alex Jordan

Massive Wipeout on the slippery bridge: Ray Siebrits

Thanks to Camberley Wines, ‘Under the Influence’ and the Old Oaks team for all the prizes and for organising the day.

Next year, we are looking to expand to 20 fourballs, and we are taking on board sponsorships, so anyone out there looking to support the cause, please let us know!

The Old Oaks Union is officially launching it’s ‘Giving Back’ initiative, where the Old Oaks Union will support worthy young students in putting them through Somerset College – a wonderful project that will change the lives of all its beneficiaries.

To get involved in next year’s Old Oaks Golf Day (always the Friday before Founders’ Day), please email oldoaks@somcol.co.za with your cell-phone number and your fourball details.

All the best,

The Old Oaks!
