Ethos

Somerset College is a school with a Christian foundation, and has at its centre St Matthew's Chapel, symbolic of the importance placed on the spiritual development of students and staff alike.

Respect, honesty, integrity, caring and diligence are key values that are central to the school's ethos, often causing visitors to remark on the polite, pleasant and friendly attitude of the students.

The school motto "pietas" means 'to be of service to the community' and is a core value. The school lives out its outreach and encourages service in many different ways.

It is this emphasis on the fostering of sound relationships within and beyond the school community that instils in everyone at Somerset College the caring and responsibility needed to become a positive, constructive member of society.

Somerset College strives to remain a centre of academic excellence where professional standards are maintained and where young people learn in a safe and happy environment.

The school collaborates closely with the home; as such active partnership is necessary to lead young people to the fullness of their potential.

Our school has a holistic approach to the whole education of a child, and our outdoor education programme plays a vital role in this approach. We celebrate the potential of each and every child and teachers are sensitive to the needs and circumstances of each pupil.

As an eco – school, Somerset College promotes respect for our natural environment and actively embraces environmental sustainability in school management and in daily life.

At Somerset College the dignity and value of each person is recognised and this reflects in the organisation of the entire school. We aim to discover potential in the young child, to nurture it through the Preparatory phase and then to allow the child to fulfil his or her potential in Senior school, before moving out into the world as a well adjusted and successful young adult, who will make a positive contribution to our country and the world they find themselves in.
