About Somerset College

Management
The Senior School Headmaster, Mr David Campbell, has held his position since January of 2004, prior to which he was Head at another independent school.

A BA (History & English) graduate and an English teacher by trade, Mr Campbell is passionate about developing the ´whole child´, and ensuring that young people who matriculate from Somerset College are balanced, emotionally mature, skilled and resourceful individuals. To this end, the development of leadership in all students is also one of his primary focus areas.

As Head in a fast-paced world, he is particularly interested in the development of balance in the school community: balance in individuals (staff and students), balance in what the school has to offer and in how they strive for excellence, and balance in the school´s culture, ethos and outlook.

Headmaster of the Preparatory School, Mr Jan de Waal was appointed as of January 2008, prior to which he was Head at Sweet Valley Primary.

He began his career as a high school teacher, worked in the corporate sector for a time, and also ran a school spanning Grades 1 – 12, where he discovered his affinity for the primary school environment.

His qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts degree (History major) and a Masters degree in Education from the University of Cape Town.

Passionate about teaching, he is committed to the school´s intent of ´celebrating potential´. He feels each and every child in the school should have a caring, nurturing environment which will assist in the building of self confidence and esteem needed to pass onto the next phase of the child´s school career.
