About Somerset College

ICT
Computer lessons in the Preparatory School begin in Grade 1, with students in subsequent years learning basic Microsoft Office skills that enable them to conduct Internet research and produce documents, slide shows and spreadsheets. These skills are further developed at the Senior School where efficient research skills, graphic applications, development of multimedia, programming in JAVA and the International Computer Driving Licence course all form part of the Grade 8 and 9 curriculum. Information Technology is offered as a subject of choice from Grade 10.

Committed to constantly upgrading and developing its facilities, the College opened its doors in 1997 with a fully functioning computer network. Based on a Microsoft platform, the network utilises various servers that manage 200 computers network-wide. Staff and students enjoy the convenience of 24/7 broadband access, private mailboxes accessible from home, four computer rooms, data points in every classroom and the boarding house, and wireless access points across the campus.

The ongoing upgrading of teaching facilities in the classroom is a priority, and the past number of years has seen the installation of interactive white boards and network accessibility in many classrooms.

Children born into today's fast-paced technological age are used to information being readily accessible to them, both through computer programs and the Internet. As such, it is essential that Somerset College remains on the cutting edge of Information and Communications Technology.
